T oday, Canada's first week of official federal election season. US President Donald Trump Announces 25% tariffs on car imports and parts and some sports updates for your March Madness brackets. But first, here's Mariela with this weekend's weather forecast. Mariela Torroba Hennigen Torontonians should brace themselves for a quote, potent spring ice storm starting late this Friday. Yesterday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement. According to The Star, incoming freezing rain amounts are predicted to be from five to 15 millimeters. The freezing rain could pile up to 20 millimeters in some areas. This cold front will be reaching most of Ontario, so try to stay warm if you can. Now for some news just across the border, a judge ordered several Trump administration officials to prevent key figures from deleting texts exchanged in the messaging app Signal about attack plans on Houthi rebels in Yemen. The order comes from Judge James E. Boasberg after the nonprofit watchdog group American Oversight filed a lawsuit. According to the New York Times, they accused Trump's National Security team of violating federal records laws by using Signal. Trump senior officials leaked attack plans on Yemen's Hooli rebels over Signal text messages. This happened when National Security Advisor Michael Waltz mistakenly invited journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to their group chat. Members of this group chat included US Vice President Vance, Secretary of Defense, Pete hegseth, Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. Jeffrey Goldberg is the Editor-in-Chief for The Atlantic magazine. In an interview with political podcast the bulwark Goldberg said he was sitting in his car at a grocery store parking lot when he first received the texts from Pete Hegseth on the encrypted messaging app. The text exchanges occurred between March 11 and March 15, according to The New York Times. The Trump administration's response has been to unequivocally deny the national security breach. White House press secretary Caroline Levitz said, quote, no classified material was sent on this messaging thread, unquote. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth viciously bashed Goldberg for his reporting calling him a quote, deceitful and highly discredited, so called journalist who's made a profession of peddling hoaxes time and time again, unquote. Meanwhile, the New York Times also reports that US military pilots express quote, bewilderment upon learning about the situation. Most experts also say this most likely was a breach in operational security. The scandal, now dubbed as Signal Gate, has intelligence officials from the Trump administration facing intense questioning from a House committee, especially from Democratic senators. In other international news from South America, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will face a trial after being charged with an attempt to orchestrate a scheme to overthrow the country's democratically elected government. Bolsonaro and seven other members of his inner circle face criminal charges in this investigation. According to CNN Brazil, the charges include forming an armed criminal organization, damage to Heritage property and an attempted coup d'etat. The New York Times reported that, quote, The five justice Supreme Court panel voted unanimously to move forward with the trial, unquote. Bolsonaro's trial date is yet to be scheduled. This case refers to the 2023 riots of January 8 in the capital city of Brasilia. Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and vandalized several federal government buildings, including Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace, which is the President's official workplace. The New York Times also reported that, quote, if convicted, Bolsonaro could face 12 to 40 years in prison. A conviction would also make him permanently ineligible to run for office under current law, unquote. However, political analysts expect any sentence to be shorter. Now to Callie for national news. Callie Wright The Canadian federal election campaign is underway. Canadians will vote on April 28. Leaders debates are set to take place on April 7 and 10th. According to the CBC poll tracker, the Liberal Party is leading among decided voters steadily around 40%, with the Conservative Party following with 37% and the New Democrat party with 9%. As important as the upcoming election may be, it seems to be overshadowed by the trade war with the United States, according to the CBC. As President Trump plans to go ahead with 25% tariffs on all auto imports in the US, promising economic autonomy. In response to this statement, the CBC reported, Prime Minister Mark Carney says nothing is off the table to fight Trump's tariffs, Carney plans to speak with Trump today to continue a negotiation. In sports, March Madness continues as both the men's and women's NCAA basketball teams are fighting their way through the National Championship. The bracket has reached the so called Sweet 16. Duke star guard Cooper Flagg helped his team secure a spot in the Elite Eight after defeating Arizona last night. On the women's side, USC fans are distraught because the Trojans Juju Watkins tore a ligament in her knee. She'll be out for the rest of the season. The tournament continues all weekend. Brackets will be busted and teams will be dusted. The Toronto Maple Leafs fell short to the San Jose Sharks last night, six to five. The team remains in first place in the Atlantic Division with 43 wins and 25 losses. They are set to play the LA Kings at Cypto Arena tomorrow night. The Toronto Blue Jays played their home opener yesterday, and it did not go as planned. The Jays lost 12 to two to the Baltimore Orioles. The team is having problems off the pitch too. They are still trying to get an extension done with slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. According to the athletic he is looking for a $500 million new contract, but the Jays latest offer is still short of that number. Finally, the Toronto Raptors are set to play the Charlotte Hornets tonight at Scotiabank Arena. The team is currently on a two game winning streak, hoping to secure another one tonight. The team sits 11th in the Eastern Conference. These next two games are critical to keep their playoff run alive.
